What is an idle action RPG?

You tap to attack, but progress continues while you are away — capped, so returning is a reward rather than a requirement to play optimally.

Are the bosses just damage sponges?

No. Bosses are multi-phase with telegraphed attacks, enrage timers and a defeat wall, so beating one is a gear-and-execution check rather than a waiting game.
